Diabetes, known as “the silent killer,” takes
more lives than any other disease in the U.S.,
especially when we factor in diabetes-caused
heart attacks. Three out of four diabetes-related deaths
are caused by heart- and blood-vessel (cardiovascular)
disease. Currently 63 million Americans are diagnosed
with diabetes and one in three are considered pre-
diabetic. People with diabetes are two-to-four-times
more likely to have heart disease than persons with-
out diabetes. Even those with type 2 diabetes, who do
not have heart disease, have an increased risk of hav-
ing a heart attack. Diabetics tend to have other risk
factors for heart disease including obesity, high blood
pressure, and hardening of the arteries (atherosclero-
sis). Aside from shortening life expectancy by 15
years, diabetes greatly heightens the chance of
dementia, impotency, foot ulcers, kidney failure,
and it is the leading cause of blindness in adults.
