Children who are obese are at increased risk of being overweight or obese as adults. The Committee shares the fears of many experts who predict that today’s children will be the first generation for some time to have poorer health outcomes and a shorter life expectancy than their parents. The health implications of overweight and obesity — a range of preventable chronic diseases and premature death — are well documented. These implications are serious enough for adults who develop weight problems but pose an even greater threat for children who may develop chronic ailments at
an uncharacteristic early age. Problems include (but are not limited to) the development of
Type 2 diabetes, heart attack and stroke susceptibility, joint problems, and mental health
issues.
