The Effects of Fabrication and Construction on Curved Bridge Behavior Author : D.G. Linzell

WHAT IS THIS DOCUMENT ABOUT? : Designers can often misinterpret the effects of fabrication and construction on the behavior of bridge structures. These effects are magnified for curved bridges, whose curvature leads to forces and deformations that can deviate considerably from straight bridges of similar design. The behavior of a curved steel bridge during construction was one item examined for the Curved Steel Bridge Research Project (CSBRP) funded by the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA). A series of elastic tests of an experimental curved bridge system were performed during erection. Analytical models were created and their predictions were compared against experimental results. Two types of analytical models were developed: (1) sophisticated fi- nite element models using ABAQUS and (2) a simplified model using the V-Load method
